NETWORKING WITH OTHER SOCIETIES

Overview of the Q Grading Training
On October 30, 2024, Kirurumwe Coffee Lab opened its doors for a transformative Q-grading training session, designed to refine participants' cupping skills and deepen their understanding of coffee flavor profiling. This session, led by Migyeong Kim and Jiwook Kim (Henry), provided both theoretical insights and practical experience for the 10 trainees in attendance who were also farmers from other societies with the Embu union.
Exploring the Art and Science of Cupping
The day began with Henry's engaging introduction to the intricate processes of coffee preparation. His detailed explanations of the differences between washed and natural coffee processing methods underscored how these techniques shape a coffee's flavor profile, laying a robust foundation for the hands-on activities to follow.
Practical Cupping: A Journey Across Flavors
The highlight of the training was the practical cupping session, where participants explored the unique characteristics of four diverse coffee samples sourced from Guatemala and Ethiopia. The samples included:
Guatemala Fully Washed
Guatemala Washed
Ethiopia Natural
Ethiopia Washed
Guided by Henry's expertise, trainees assessed each sample's flavor, aroma, acidity, body, and overall balance. The interactive nature of the session encouraged lively discussions and a deeper understanding of how factors like origin and processing methods influence taste.
Insightful Discussions and Skill Development
The flavor profile discussions proved invaluable for the trainees. Henry's detailed breakdown of each sample’s qualities helped participants sharpen their sensory skills and refine their ability to detect complex flavor notes. This section also emphasized the importance of sustainable and precise processing methods in achieving desired coffee characteristics.
Conclusion and Networking
As the session wrapped up, gratitude filled the air. Trainees and trainers exchanged heartfelt acknowledgments, celebrating a day of shared knowledge and growth. The event concluded with light refreshments, fostering a relaxed environment for networking and camaraderie.
